This short book narrates the story of a young boy; who loves playing with his younger sister, doing stuff with his family, understands its okay for boys to cry and enjoys sampling different cultures and countries. He also shows that, what is acceptable in one culture or country might not necessarily be acceptable in another. Readers are taken through social studies playfully and effortlessly.

Interview with Victoria Anderson

  What inspired you to write Larry &Family?

I wanted to get reluctant readers interested in reading. Some kids as you know, are just not interested in books and reading because they believe it’s boring. I wanted to make reading and learning fun for them. Of course, names like, DH Lawrence, Jane Austen, will not mean anything to the reluctant reader or any child at this stage, but I wanted them to be familiar with the names and to possibly consider reading more books as time goes on.

What was your favourite part of the book?

My favourite part was when Larry and his friends ventured out to 'Mean Street'...

What was the hardest part to write in the book?

The hardest was putting all together to make it relevant to the daily lives of the readers, balancing it with what they need while infusing it with humour and current affairs, hence; Britain’s Got Talent, Countdown, McDonalds, Puss in boots, Oprah Winfrey, Roald Dahl, Kate and William, Dr Ben Carson, Kenneth Grahame etc.

What scene in your writing has made you laugh the hardest or cry the most?

It has to be Old Helga: she was a busybody and was mistakenly arrested as a robbery suspect because, she took it upon herself to intercept a robber. What made me laugh so much was the fact that, none of her neighbours were willing to go to the police on her behalf because of her meddlesomeness except the parrot. So, in my mind’s eye, I imagined the parrot going down to the Police Station and arguing her case while she protested her innocence. I couldn't stop laughing!

Will you be writing anymore books?

Another is already out, it’s called ‘Stuart’ and it’s also on the Amazon bestseller list.

Are you saying Larry & Family is on the best seller list?

Yes, in its category.

Can you tell us a bit about Stuart?

It's mainly social studies. It’s meant to make children aware of other cultures/countries beyond theirs and how they live and do things differently.

“…Mum asked them what was wrong and they said they did not want to go because they were not going to get toys. Jack started wailing. He said they were going to get books and he did not want books, but more toys. Mum was excited but because the children were so upset, she cancelled the planned trip and instead decided to eat at home, but told them off for their poor behaviour.”

“…Old Helga always looked forward to grandma’s visits. The visits gave her the chance to catch up on the latest gossip. She told grandma, about the partying cats, and how she almost fell on the kerb on her way back from the library because, she was trying to see if the traffic warden was doing his job properly.”

“…That’s why I avoid her,” said Larry. “Old Helga is boring and a terrible gossip.”

“I don’t even know any of the names she mentions,” he said. “Who is DH Lawrence? Is she the florist down the road?”

. “Yikes!” exclaimed Ken. They soon heard voices and Freddy started ‘quaking in his paws’. The voices got louder, and as they got nearer they saw two burly looking men who appeared startled. The men started whispering, smiling crookedly and rubbing their hands together gleefully “

“…Even Larry now enjoyed visiting Old Helga because she kept a special rocking chair for him and a pair of warm slippers with his favourite books.”
